It is part of "La Grande Course", which brings together six long-distance ski mountaineering events.

For the 2024 edition, the Patrouille des Glaciers will host the ISMF Long Distance World Championships (WCH LD).

The Patrouille des Glaciers is run by patrol of three participants and two departures. One from Zermatt (Z1 & Z2 race) and the other from Arolla (A1 & A2).
